Can You Go To The ER For A Dental Emergency?
There are some situations in which the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority recommends that you go to the emergency room for urgent dental care. Specifically, the agency recommends this course of action if your face or is extremely swollen, or if you took a direct blow to your jaw or teeth. You should also go to the emergency room at the nearest hospital if you cannot stop the bleeding in your mouth following a dental procedure or injury.
The doctor at the emergency room will evaluate the extent of the damage to the best of his or her ability and make a referral to the most appropriate service. If you have dental insurance, be sure to request the emergency dentist on call. If you don’t your insurance coverage may be denied.
Otherwise, if you believe you are having a dental emergency after hours and do not see it listed above, call us and talk to a member of our team. We are happy to discuss and figure out the best possible plan for treatment even after hours of regular business.
What Should You Do If You Just Have A Toothache?
There is no doubt that a toothache is both painful and annoying. It is also indicative of many things ranging from a cavity to something more serious. If you are in agony after hours, please call us at 204-334-4388.
What Should You Do Now?
In some cases, there are a few things you can do to prevent further damage during a dental emergency.
Lost Tooth or Knocked Out Tooth – Do you still have the tooth? If so, DO NOT rinse it in cold water. Rinse it off in warm water, and if possible, reinsert it into your mouth gently by biting down gently but firmly on a clean cloth. If you cannot reinsert it, place it in a glass of cold milk or water, and act quickly and go straight to the dentist.
Broken/Cracked Tooth – These teeth can be preserved to some degree, or reassembled if some of the pieces of the tooth are still available. Collect any loose pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and head straight to the dentist.
Lost Crown – Similarly to a lost tooth, if you have the crown, try re-inserting it by gently biting down gently but firmly on a clean cloth. If you cannot, bring it with you and get to the dentist as soon as possible.
Lost Filling – Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and if possible. Find some sugarless gum to place over the top of the space where the filling was, then see a dentist as soon as possible.
Broken or Dislocated Jaw – This is a situation for the emergency room at your nearest hospital.
Any severe jaw damage is an emergency best dealt with by facilities where emergency surgery can take place if necessary.
